I Love Library Books (EB Press 1981) by Janice Jensen and Siegfried Engelmann teaches the most reluctant beginning reader to read through trade “library” books identified as phonics-appropriate. The authors screened hundreds of titles to find phonics-appropriate books like Curious George and Frog and Toad Are Friends. The vocabulary is pre-taught, so the child reads a “real book.” The teacher presentation manual and student workbook come with reinforcement skills in the guise of engaging, hands-on activities.
